Planting 5000 Mangrove Trees and 23 Malapari Trees

Sumenep District, Madura is one of the coastal areas in Indonesia that has important coastal ecosystem potential to support climate change mitigation efforts. One of the important coastal ecosystems is mangrove forest, which has a role as a natural carbon sink as well as protecting the coastline from the threat of abrasion. In addition, the malapari plant (Pongamia pinnata) is also known to have potential as a source of vegetable-based renewable energy.

PT Radiant Utama Interinsco Tbk through its Corporate Social and Environmental Responsibility (CSER) program entitled “Planting today, protecting the earth for our children and grandchildren later” has carried out planting activities of 5,000 mangrove trees and 23 malapari trees in the Kalianget coastal area, Sumenep Regency, Madura. This activity took place from February to May 2025 and culminated in a symbolic planting ceremony on May 20, 2025.

The coastal rehabilitation project began with observation of the planting site in August 2024, followed by mangrove and malapari nurseries from various regional sources such as Sumenep, Jakarta and Lembata. Education and technical discussions were also organized with implementing partners, including PT SBM and GARWIYNAS, as well as environmental organizations such as IKAMaT and BATARA.

A thorough field assessment was conducted in February 2025, covering biophysical aspects such as salinity, water pH and soil substrate, as well as social aspects such as land legality and local community support. The planting process was carried out in two stages, starting with trial planting on February 12, 2025, followed by mass planting covering three different locations with a total area of nearly 900 m².

This series of CSER activities began in mid-2024 with the observation, nursery, and gradual planting stages carried out with local partners PT Supraco Indonesia (SBM) and GARWIYNAS. A total of more than 4,300 mangrove seedlings and 8 malapari seedlings have been successfully planted until May 2025.

The culmination of the activity was marked by a planting ceremony on May 20, 2025 which was attended by representatives of the management of PT Radiant Utama Interinsco Tbk, the Sumenep District Environment Office, local government, security forces, fishing communities, and local communities. A total of 64 mangrove seedlings and 8 malapari seedlings were symbolically planted during the event. The event was also filled with traditional dances, remarks from government figures, and the installation of program signboards as a sign of joint commitment in protecting the coastal environment.

The program will be complemented by continuous monitoring that will take place over the next 3 years to ensure the success of the program. By involving local communities in the nursery to monitoring process, this program not only focuses on environmental aspects, but also encourages community empowerment to participate in protecting their own coastal ecosystems.

Through this concrete step, PT Radiant Utama Interinsco Tbk hopes to make a long-term contribution to the environment, while supporting the sustainable development agenda in Indonesia's coastal areas
